For the last 5 years I have worked on a case with a woman who was born in Nicaragua. She often told me how from time to time she goes back to her village and brings care packages for the local people. That sounded like such a nice thing to do I followed her example last year, on a surf trip to El Salvador. I packed a bag filled with kids soccer balls, school supplies, shorts, T shirts, etc. My surf guide knew all the local kids so he gave the stuff away. I was touched by how the kids (and in some cases their mothers) appreciated the little gifts. The most popular thing with the smaller children was the color-by-number coloring books that my wife Colette packed for me! The kids had never seen anything like it before! A more interesting thing for me was what two surfers from Ohio did. They contacted a local orphanage that gave them a wish list. By collecting donations from their friends and contacts they were able to make a lot more kids happy then I even dreamed of doing. In January a friend and I are going on another surf trip to Central America. On this trip I want to help Laetitia Deweer’s organization. Laetitia is a woman from Belgium who created CEPIA Asociacion, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) about 2 hours inland from where we are going. It is dedicated to improving the lives of poor children and women who have little education or marketable skills and who are often unwed mothers. Laetitia is an example of how some very motivated and selfless people can have a positive impact on a lot of lives. Here is a video about what she is doing.
