For the last two days due to the weather trend, I was pretty sure - TopicsExpress

For the last two days due to the weather trend, I was pretty sure in my mind what our dinner menu will look like tonight. Generally if it is an extremely cold Friday night, the menu is a no brainer in our house. And today is Friday and currently the temperature is -14C. So the menu should be “egg curry and paratha” followed by an episode of Hercule Poirot sitting on our comfy green couch by the fireplace. But it will not be that tonight. My son is sleeping over at his friend’s house tonight. It was a last minute plan. I was not sure that he won’t have dinner tonight until this morning. Suddenly now I don’t feel like cooking the “egg curry” that he still calls “unda gurry” like he used to when he was a baby. This sudden change in my mood about cooking got me thinking today. What motivates us to cook? What demotivates us to cook?? Yes, my son will definitely not care if we have egg curry without him tonight. I can make it again next Friday because, lets face it, this is January and it will continue to be brutally cold for at least another 5-6 weeks. He is sleeping over at his friends house having fun and in all probability won’t even know what we are eating tonight. If I know all that, then why do I suddenly have absolutely no intention of cooking his favorite “unda gurry” tonight ? Where exactly lies the pleasure in enjoying a particular dish?? Is it actually enjoying the taste of it yourself or is it the pleasure of watching someone you love savor it? I know for sure that the thought of a Friday night dinner with “unda gurry” and paratha followed by an episode of Poirot in a dimly lit room right by the fireplace on a very cold night most definitely will light up my son’s face. And I know now that the real pleasure of “egg curry” for me is in watching that. So what’s the point of eating just another egg curry? Hence I am not cooking tonight. And hence no recipe. Leftover soup and bread it is. And tonight’s song has nothing to do with anything. It is simply one of my son’s favorite songs. Its “handlebar” by Flobots.
