For the last weekend of 2014, a band of snow is expected to spread across the central Plains, the Midwest, Great Lakes, followed by northern Maine as a low pressure center tracks just to the south and east. Meanwhile, another low will move in from off the west coast of Canada into the Pacific Northwest as arctic air begins to push south into the western U.S. Snow is expected to spread south and east into the Intermountain West and northern and central Rockies through the weekend. By New Years Eve and New Years Day, arctic air will make its way back into the country as an arctic high pressure system builds southward from western Canada into the western U.S. and the Plains. Low temperatures on New Years Eve are forecast to drop below zero in the northern and central Rockies and into the northern Plains, moderating slightly by New Years Day. These temperatures are as much as 30 degrees colder than normal. By next weekend, we could be looking at a storm moving across the Desert Southwest, while a new storm begins to form in the Deep South. Have a happy and safe new year!
