For the month of February I decided to give tribute to a wonderful woman who gave so much of herself to our Sonoma County Community throughout her life. For many of us who have lived in Sonoma County for any great length of time will feel the loss and a deep ache in our hearts for this well-respected woman. I am speaking about Saralee McClelland Kunde who lost her battle with cancer in Santa Rosa, CA on Sunday, January 26, 2014. If you are not familiar with this beautiful woman or her many accomplishments, you would have found it summed it up pretty accurately by Tim Tesconi, staff writer for the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, in an article he wrote last year calling Sara the “Godmother of Good Causes, especially if they relate to agriculture, farm youth and the Sonoma County Fair.” It is pretty hard to encompass all her lifetime achievements from her involvement in the wine industry with her beloved husband, Richard, to her being inducted into the Sonoma County Farm Bureau’s Hall of Fame. This woman was filled with such a passion and love for agriculture and the farm industry that it seemed to flow effortlessly and with positivity throughout her entire life. Even during her valiant and brave battle with cancer, she kindly responded and corresponded with so many friends on Facebook. By the long list of well-wishers she had received over the past several months, you couldn’t help but feel the intense love, respect and admiration for this wonderful strong woman that had been expressed from deep within their hearts. Thank you Saralee for caring to make a difference in our beloved Sonoma County by teaching us and inspiring us to appreciate our farming roots while helping us to preserve our rich agricultural history. Thank you for touching many of us in a way we will forever remember you with love as well as your optimistic look on life. This beautiful ‘cropped’ image for February was captured standing along the side of the road off Highway 12 outside of Kenwood, CA facing the well-known amazing Kunde Vineyards where beautiful orange poppies were abound in full spring bloom. May you rest in the bliss of peace Saralee Kunde!
