For the nurses the next order of business was to provide heat for their quarters since the small hibachi was far too inadequate. Pleas by Commander Giles for a potbellied stove in the nurses’ area were immediately rejected by the Japanese commander, and Giles was bashed for his insolence in asking. Giles repeated his requests each day and was always met with bashings and vicious slaps to his head. Five days later the Japanese made a formal presentation of a stove. After four days’ delay, the camp commandant could save face, presenting the stove as a gesture of kindness and generosity rather than as a response to an American request. Slowly the men started to realize how important it was that their new “benefactors” be given opportunity to save face. Mansell, Roger (2012-10-22). Captured: The Forgotten Men of Guam (p. 63).
