For the past 4 years Massey University (New Zealand) has been offering a distance paper/course called Animal Emergency Response which is delivered by the Institute of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences. This course can be credited to the Graduate Certificate and Diploma in Emergency Management. We have had people from various backgrounds (fire service, emergency managers, NGOs) who have completed this course and gained a lot from it. This is an evidence-base course which includes topics such as the human-animal bond, animal behaviour in emergency situations, co-ordinated incident management, temporary animal shelters for large and small animals, introduction to the emergency management cycle, technical large animal rescue, and roles in animal welfare emergency management. The learning outcomes include: Students who successfully complete this paper will be able to: 1. Illustrate the potential consequences of disasters and emergency events on the human-animal bond 2. Explain a relevant Co-ordinated Incident Management system and how this effects animal emergency management. 3. Discuss the potential effects of a disaster caused by natural and man-made hazards on animal welfare. 4. Describe Animal Welfare Emergency management and its integration with Emergency management. 5. Perform the technical tasks required by Animal Emergency Management Personnel.
