For the past two days I have been watching a real life drama being played out on the roof of Homebase, the chosen nesting site of a number of Seagulls. Two out of the three chicks of one pair of gulls have somehow found themselves in the deep guttering of the roof and are obviously unable to get out again. The parents, being birdbrained, seem clueless. Being an empathetic soul I cannot help but feel the alarm and stress of the chicks and parents in this unfortunate situation. Hopefully it will not be too long before the chicks fledge sufficiently to fly the few inches required to get back onto the roof. My level of empathy for these Gulls only exists, some would say, because their struggles are in plain sight. Yet I also share the pain of billions of fellow Human Beings suffering War, starvation, absolute poverty, slavery and torture throughout the world. Obviously this pain would be more acute if these things were all happening on the roof of Homebase. This is what is is to be Human! No matter how much we may try to ignore such things, we all feel the pain to some degree.
