For the past two days Ive been wondering about the value of the property and the difficulty that the seminary and the folks at 815 are having with money. I wondered if this werent all of plan/plot by someone to close the seminary. I dont know if it is true, but with no comment coming from The Board of Trustees and nothing being said by the Presiding Bishop, there is a lot of silence to fill with speculation. Last Sunday many of us preached on Jesus warning to the Pharisees that the vineyard given to the people of Israel was about to be taken away. In my sermon I wondered about it this way. One week in and I have no idea how this will end, but it may end with the closing of the General Theological Seminary. It may be that this vineyard that God had established through the General Convention in 1817, and planted the vine through his servant Clement Clark Moore, or dug a winepress financed through the will of Jacob Sherred in 1821 or built a tower by the hands of faithful and talented men and women of the church, it may be gone. I continue to send my small monthly contribution to GTS, I sent 20 times as much to the fund for the Eight. Neither amount of money will help in the long run Im afraid. Almost a week and a half in, or has it been a lifetime, I have no idea how this will end, but this I know. I will NOT let any of this keep me from continuing to love the Eight, nor my friends on the Board, nor even Kurt Dunkle onto who shoulder I sobbed on September 11, 2001. I cant say that Ive liked anything that theyve all done (any of them.) That was true, however, before this all began. I imagine that they would say the same of me. Recalling my grade in NT-1, at least one has expressed some disappointment with me. But my love is not based on never being disappointed or even with sharp disagreements. I am so sorry that the situation has come to this. I continue to pray for the students, the Eight, the Board, the other faculty and staff, and the church meaning her peopel. I do not pray for the property, it is a thing.
