For the record, Ania is my real name. My full name is Anna Maria Bula. Polish is phonetic which means that both Ns are pronounced. Since that would be quite a mouthful, so as a nickname people call Annas Ania in Polish. Ania is like Sam, or Tom, or any other short form of a name. It is what I grew up being called by family, friends, and so forth. So why did I stop being called Ania? Because English speakers and French speakers couldnt pronounce it properly and instead made it something to be mocked. Because the first thing I was ever bullied about was my name, which got changed to Onion by my classmates. So what? Do I lack integrity for taking back my name and making my public identity the name I identify with more? What about Sam? Does Sam lack integrity? #ResistRegistration Im white, but I wonder how many PoC are going to have the veracity of their names questioned by FB.
