For the record, this is something thats niggled at me for a long while. Its the concept invading the misuse of language called giving back. Its supposed to be a euphemism for charity, or giving to others. But giving back implies the successful person whos either donating money, time, or acquired expertise freely for the sole purpose of enriching others, maybe even pulling them up, is giving back something they took from others. Theyre not in any sense of the word giving back anything they took. Theyre sharing what theyve earned, almost always a result of a very long time of hard work, study, and superior discipline. Look, I get what most folks intend for the phrase to mean. But words still mean things, regardless of the current cultural trend to slaughter the English language at every opportunity. Those who choose to share their knowledge, skills, and/or financial blessings, took nothing. They earned what theyre now SHARING, of their own free will. In other words . . . . They built that.
