For the second week running we have received a call from a distressed couple who are getting married. Both calls are from couples who have purchased wedding cakes from other cake makers and when they have seen their cake, the quality has been appalling! The call I received this morning from a couple was that their cake looked like a 4 year old had made it and their cake was still raw! How terrible this must be for a them. The cake last week was made by a chef and it was not what the couple had asked for at all and as it was the day before their wedding they used one of our dummy cakes. This weeks cake was made by a friend of the family and it was still a decent amount of money but not what professional cake makers would charge for a wedding cake. When I hear about these things I do think that the couple should have checked the quality of their cake makers work and I also bear in mind that you do get what you pay for. However, I also believe that if you are selling anything to anyone you should really believe in your product and that includes being honest with yourself about your skills. It is a great honour to be part of a couples wedding day and when we are chosen to make their cake we will give nothing less than our all! If we was out of our comfort zone I would thank them for asking us but explain that I would not want to make their cake as this is not something I felt we could execute perfectly. My mum (Linda) has over 26 years experience making cakes and she has passed her City & Guilds and her Sugar Flowers ABC Part 1 & 2 all with distinctions and I have been very fortunate to be in a position to learn so much from her.
