“For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.” (2 Timothy 4:3-4). Our tendency to emphasise God’s attributes of love and forgiveness at the expense of upholding his holiness and justice has led to a universal tolerance of sin and a rejection of any possibility of judgement. There are sins that are clearly condemned in Scripture that today we remain silent about either because it is considered ‘politically incorrect’ to expose them, or because they are so endemic that our collective social conscience is seared.
