For the whole of Malaysia, 22,702,221 vehicles, including motorcycles, were registered with the JPJ at the end of 2012. This was an increase of 35% since the end of 2007 At end 2012, four states had more than a million privately-registered 4-wheelers (cars, pick-ups MPVs, SUVs, etc) – WPKL (3,332,767), Johor (1,312,016), Selangor (1,052,353) and Penang/Province Wellesley (1,226,223). In 2007, only WPKL had more than a million private-registered vehicles. 62% (3,332,767) of vehicles in WPKL were privately-registered 4-wheeled vehicles such as MPVs, SUVs, pick-ups and passenger cars. The East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak had a total of 2,491,945 registered vehicles, with Sarawak having 58% of that number (1,465,078) In 5 years, the total registered vehicle population in Wilayah Persekutuan KL (WPKL) increased by 42%, from 3,748,426 to 5,320,562 vehicles. Remember that the govts fuel subsidy bill grows not just due to the price of oil but the actual number of cars and drivers that needs to be subsidized. As a simple calculation, if our subsidy bill is RM21 billion now and global oil prices remains the same for 5 years, just from a five years car population growth of 42% will mean that the govt subsidy bill will increase to about RM30 billion. And a further 5 years will mean a subsidy bill of RM42 billion without a single sen increase in world oil prices. motortrader.my/news/10-facts-about-malaysias-vehicle-population/
