For this weeks #MeetMolotovMonday, we catch up with Assistant Company Manager and Production Stage Manager Katherine Offutt about her favorite horror film: As far as horror movies go – I’ve always loved films that hinge upon suspense and a slow build – films where everything seems just slightly more “off” than in a normal crime drama, for instance. That said, my favorite movie in the genre would have to be J.A. Bayonas 2007 flick The Orphanage. It gracefully combines a standard missing person’s style hunt with subtle hints of the sinister and supernatural from the very beginning. And then it lets the audience wonder if the protagonist, a grieving mother (Belén Rueda gives a heartwrenching, honest portrayal) searching for her missing, ill son, is simply obsessed and frantic, or haunted by more than her memories. It manifests the idea of personal demons and the skeletons in people’s closets in such a way that the reveal isn’t horrific, but brings closure – Laura and the audience have been tormented, haunted and ultimately grieving the whole film – and the payoff is grim, but remarkably soothing. Have you seen The Orphanage? (You can support Molotov Theatre Group by grabbing the Blu-ray on Amazon Smile. ;) smile.amazon/dp/B0015ET3YY) Let us know what you think of Katherines pick!
