For this week’s musical selection, I decided to plumb the depths - TopicsExpress

For this week’s musical selection, I decided to plumb the depths of the new Henry Mancini box set i just got from, Amazon UK, this past week. Personally, I don’t think enough people, take Henry Mancini seriously. Sure he’s most famous for the music he wrote for a certain animated pink animal, and a lot of his music has a whimsical flair. But, after years of watching the many, Mancini scored, movies, and hearing his tunes bounce around the world of pop culture, it finally dawned on me, just how beautiful his music is. Some people will consider his compositions, “elevator music,” and I’m sure, there are “elevator music” versions of a lot of his stuff. Regardless, listening to the real thing, recordings of his film scores, reveal something much more that I will leave for you to find on your own and you need to leave some of your baggage behind to allow this to “open up before your ears. There were so many tracks that I could have used, but after long thought, I came up with something from, one of my favorites: The “Gunn” (as in Peter Gunn) film score. Everybody will recognize the wonderful theme that was used as the opening music to the Blues Brothers act. but, since I’m aiming at roads less-traveled, I chose my favorite track, “A Quiet Happening.” In fact, I’m presenting a non-film score rendering by somebody entirely different. It’s a kick butt version of “A Quiet Happening, recorded by Shelly Manne and his Men, from 1968s “Jazz Gunn” album. https://youtube/watch?v=crhx163d0Qo
