For those curious about how the first week went? Well, this was the week we transitioned from a virtual public school (challenging curriculum, nearly all work done on-line, work done at home, compliant with everything regular public schools have to do - in other words, lots of testing) to...... a regular bricks and mortar school. Weve been planning for this for a year, and working out potential bugs over the last 10 months with the local elementary. This recent Tuesday was their first day. C did just fine, K had an ok day but it was a bit harder for her. C did well the second day - K had a bad test experience (cried when they asked her to handwrite 3 pages, the teacher involved did NOT know she had a 504). After that, and a polite-but-firm my child has a 504, its not appropriate for her to only be offered her legal accomodations after she starts sobbing email and phone message? I heard from the principal and the head of special ed almost immediately and things started getting much better. Their tech started getting set up the next day, communication improved with Ks teacher (she is actually VERY nice) and things Stopped Going Sideways. They finished up the week today, both have laptops merged with the school system and email access so they dont have to do handwriting past say 2 or 3 sentences. K had a writing assignment today and cranked out a very amusing 9 sentence paragraph about being scared by church bells (my alarm clock setting). :) All in all, I think its a good placement, and I think they are indeed finally ready for a (mostly) standard school experience. Bob Smith was able to show up for school dismissal the first day and Friday so that was very nice. Katherine Smith, we got some great pics of the first day. :)
