For those interested in an update about CEDAR, the Heeler dog who was running loose on the streets in and around Talent and Phoenix for almost 2 months. The couple in Hood River who adopted him after he was finally caught (theyd actually been one of those who had seen him running scared along the highway) sent in this update. Hearing happy stories like this is what makes volunteering or being a foster parent for FOTAS so doubly rewarding. His new owner says: Cedar is really coming out of his shell. At first it seemed like he was spending a lot of energy on stress & he would get skittery & needed a nap to refresh. As the week went on he used up less energy on stress and has more for running up & down the stairs (3 at a time!) squeaking his toys. We went on a nice hike Saturday morning and he was great on the trail leading the way (I kept him on leash). This morning he was so obnoxious that we finally had to do something so we took him to a pretty secure area near the marina & took him off leash (for the 1st time) and threw the tennis ball & held our breath. He was so fast & happy chasing the ball and after 7 or 8 throws started bringing it back & putting it in my hand. We are still keeping him on leash all the time, even in the car, but he really needed to just burn rubber. Also, a funny thing happened yesterday. Josh needed to use his old F250 Ford Lariat pickup truck to move a river raft so Cedar & I decided to come along. When I opened the truck door Cedar jumped right in and laid on the bench seat between us putting his head on Joshs leg. Were pretty sure hes done that many times before, makes us think he was a ranch dog. Were still working on chew the toy-not the hand (hes a bit mouthy) and wait before getting into or out of the car. Hes doing really well and trying really hard to be a good dog. He makes me very happy.
