For those (like me) who carry water bottles instead of a bladder: Weight on my scale: Empty 1L Nalgene - 6.65 ounces Empty 32oz Powerade - 1.70 ounces If you carry two water bottles, thats 10 ounces you can save in carry weight just by using empty Powerade Bottles instead of Nalgenes. Gatorade bottles are similar in weight to the Powerade bottles, just shaped a bit differently. I personally called Coca Cola (Powerade) and Pepsi (Gatorade) this morning and asked them if there was any reason I should not be using these bottles as far as toxins leaching into my water. They both said there was no threat of any toxins leaching into my water. They both say they can only recommend them for a one-time use and they should not be reused as water bottles but they both also said it was only due to the fact that they could not guarantee people would get them sterilized/bacteria free and that it is only for sanitary reasons they cannot recommend them for more than a one-time use. We all have to make our own decisions about what goes into our bodies but Ive been using Powerade/Gatorade bottles a few years now for hiking, and after my phone calls this morning I feel even more confident I made the right decision all along. Now let me see what extra junk I can put in my pack to use up that 10 ounces Im saving. Lol
