For those mesmerised by the Achche din aane waale hain, here are some stats on Gujarat which has been under the command of the PM designate for a full 12 years : (1) every 2nd child under the age of 5 in Gujarat is malnourished (2) 3 out of 4 under 5 children are anaemic (3) infant mortality rate in Gujarat at 44 per 1,000 live births is less than Indias average of 42 / 1000 and is worse than countries like Algeria, Bhutan, Bolivia, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Mongolia, Zimbabwe & Nepal (4) girl child ratio has gone down from 964 in 2001 to 890 in 2011 (5) 67% of rural households in Gujarat have no access to toilets (6) 65% shit in the open (7) Gujarat is ranked 18th in India in keeping children in primary schools (8) GDP growth under Modi was 9% pa compared to 16% pa during Madhavsinh Solanki & Chimanbhai Patel governments (9) Gujarat ranks only 5th in FDI (10) Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2011 supposedly secured Rs. 20 lakh crores in investment but just 1.5% of that was invested (11) of the 8,300 MoUs signed, only 250 actually became a reality (Source : The Frontline, page 56, May 16 edition). Also read, in the same issue, an article titled Another Gujarat Model on the continued and shocking practice of untouchability in the state with some telling insights! But full marks to the BJP media strategists for having created the hype & the myth. As they say - you can fool all people some time !!!!!
