For those of us interested in the dynamics of social change and its relationship to conflict and to the currencies of social engagement, this 1983 lecture by Yuri Bezmenov (alias Tomas Schuman), a former Soviet propagandist and KGB defector, is an interesting study. He explains in detail the premises of the KGB process of subversion and takeover of target societies and the four-step formula for achieving this goal. He concludes by outlining the necessary means to counter these four steps and ends with a series of fascinating statements that caught me rather by surprise. A very interesting social reflection that would be worth discussing, particularly for those of us coming to this from perspectives of faith and theories of moral common ground. Interesting too to consider how it is that our American society has become so demoralized to use his term, polarized, adversarial, antisocial, competitive, and in many respects destabilized and dysfunctional. It is interesting to me as well to think about what is happening in Israel in this light. For me, it ultimately made sense and had more meaningful relevance from a perspective of peacebuilding and conflict transformation only in context of his closing remarks. Id be interested in any reflections from others of you.
