For those of us that like a beer at this time of year (or any time), this is the person we can thank, the colonys first brewer. Constable James Squire. Was the District Constable in the Kissing Point area whilst still carrying on his brewing. Whilst still a convict (before he got his ticket of leave) he and another convict acted as armed bodyguards for Governor MacQuarie when searching for murderous convicts. The Governor is quoted as saying I would rather have these men than the Marines. He was buried in the old Sydney cemetery which made way for the expanded Central Railway. It is believed his tombstone was relocated. Inquiries continuing on that matter. Just recently a boutique beer was named James Squire The Constable Copper Ale So, when you raise an Aussie beer this Christmas or for any reason, it all comes back to Jim. Merry Christmas my friends, known and unknown. Stay safe, have a better new year and hopefully those here now will still be with us this time next year.
