For those of you have been to Key West or were ever stationed at - TopicsExpress

For those of you have been to Key West or were ever stationed at the Boca Chica Marine base.. or was there for a brief encounter for liberty from a docked aircraft carrier.. I have this thing book marked. Even tho I consider Key West a bad place to be.. we have to talk ourself into believing that this was a good place to be, but it is also one of those places that you would love to visit but would not love to live there. IF I had not had to live alone down there.. I would have loved to be there.. but my husband was gone six to eight weeks at a time.. every two weeks. He would be off for two weeks and gone for six to eight weeks on NATO cruises. While I burned alive.. LOL.. I finally got accustomed to him being gone, but I did go for days and not hear the sound of my voice. This was when all tv stations actually signed off for the night. WE did not have Cable or any thing like Direct TV or AT& T.. no cell phones, no computers.. they were around but not for folks like myself. Our water in Key West came from Miami.. after the salt was taken out. It taste like awful.. and was never clear.. Will never forget a time when he came home. He called me to tell me that he would be at the Marine base around 7 a.m. Their flight left about 5 a.m. I went to the base with a girlfriend of mine.. and got out of the car and walked into the hanger. No runway lights on, no noise.. just found a young man asleep with this boots propped up on the desk. I crept in to see what was going on.. he was sleeping so soundly. I slapped the desk he was asleep at, my hand flat on the desk. Burned like crazy from an extremely loud and hard surface. He probably jumped about two feet into the air. I ask him at what approximate time he was expecting them and he told me that the time was still the same, around noon. I said oh no.. they are about to land in about 10 to 15 minutes or so.. of course he denied it.. I said well if you want to argue with them when they land, they will be here in a little bit.. I stood still when he told me to wait a minute. He went into the back of the hanger and ask someone.. he came back with this.. you are right mam.. they will be here in approximately 8 mintes.. and Thank you for waking me up.. I would have certainly been in a mess if you had not woke me up.. About five minutes later.. there was a huge commotion and in came a big plane.. Noone else knew about there earlier flight. I did not know that many women down there so I never called anyone.I figured if my husband could find a phone to call, they could have called their wives. WE volunteered to take a few of them home and we did.. came back and got another bunch of men and took them home.. I think we made another trip or two.. finally wives started coming in.. It was the best of times for me and also the worst of times.. He left again about five more times.. then it got too close for him to be discharged and they did not send him out anymore.. When I look back at how peaceful and good times we had like this.. I wish that he had stayed in for life.. but he wanted to come home.. I would have supported him.. but it was his life.. I might not have gone the entire time with him.. but it would have been all right. I learned how to live and survive without my family. I also learned a lot of lessons, just being his wife.. GOD bless all you here.. Here is the link that brought on another long post. I guess you all know by now that I cant say a thing without lots and lots of words.. Hope yall enjoy some of these posts.
