For those of you unfamiliar with the Race Card Project - TopicsExpress

For those of you unfamiliar with the Race Card Project (theracecardproject/) , it is a collection of cards with only six words on them used to describe personal racial blurring stories and feelings. National Geographic recently published the article below. While it is lengthy, it is definitely worth reading. While I am mostly of Western European ancestry, I frequently find myself questioning race, and why as Americans we feel so consumed with it. I believe it has everything to do with Americans not feeling that American is a race. As a melting pot of many cultures, we have never found our own shared culture, and feel we need to cling to the race(s) of our ancestry. To add to my confusion, it seem to me that it would be the same as modern Irish identifying themselves as Vikings, or modern Egyptians identifying as Romans. Perhaps they dont because those qualities are all so distant to them now, separated by centuries. If America is only going through this now because we are young, does that mean there was a time that Irish, or Egyptians, or any one else that was either invaded by, or chose to mix races also questioned whom to identify with? And if there is someday a time when Americans identify as just being Americans would it then mean that those cultures that brought about the incredible beauty of our American race would be forgotten?
