For those of you who are focusing on the SRO program, here are some thoughts to consider from an insider who has worked side by side with them. They are so much more than security. There are innumerable times that they have been a legal resource for students and parents, a comfort for a kid that is frustrated, and friend to many. Some students grow up with a poor opinion of the police and the SRO program goes a long way to combat that. It has turned kids around! It has put many kids on the path to somewhere instead of the path to nowhere. You could ask those of us on the inside for specific examples if youre trying to come up with that. Consider what CANT be measured by their presence: the number of times something tragic has not happened because they were there. How many times did kids decide not to fight or attack someone? How many times did a person with the intent to harm drive by a school and change their mind because they saw the police cruiser parked out front? How many times have our students/children been blessed and we just dont know it?
