For those of you who are wondering what went wrong while watching the election returns, I might want to remind you that those who did NOT stand behind the President in the last few years, that the lack of support really does trickle down into a kind of lukewarm enthusiasm toward other democratic representatives when they run for office. Never underestimate the value of party loyalty, especially during the mid terms. Lukewarm does not win elections. This particular time is critical. Influences of Koch brothers money, gerrymandered districts, Fox propaganda channel pumping out continuous nonsense in the backwaters combined with lukewarm support from our own camp .... they all took their toll. I am reminded of Ed Koch, former mayor of NY city whom, when beaten spoke these immortal words: So the people have spoken, now the people will be punished. And we will indeed see the repercussions of this election in the supreme court, in restrictions on womens rights, in repression of people of color and immigrants, and in increased war spending while our infrastructure and support system for our poorest and most vulnerable citizens crumbles even more. No president is perfect. No one will ever be able to fully represent our true progressive values once they are elected into office. There are too many forces they have to please. I realize this, but too many do not. Add to this a completely non supportive, do nothing congress, and it becomes impossible for one man to do anything. If you as a democrat go along with the right wing refrain; Its all Obamas fault way of thinking, you may deserve the misery this country will now reap from the results at the polls. If you water down the impact of your vote by supporting third party people who cannot win, you all helped the Republicans win this round. If you didnt vote at all this time, you have failed to realize that these mid terms, and elections on local levels of government may actually be the most important of all, because eventually they all rise through the support system of the party they affiliate with. Sorry folks, this is how the real world of politics works, and if you, like me, truly want change, we may have to work lots harder with a more sober and realistic vision. What was not accomplished at the polls may have to turn instead to active protests, civil disobedience and other efforts to effect change in the future. Rant over. I plan to spend the next few days catching up with my spiritual practice and maybe even by reading a good novel to take my mind off the horrors that may be visited upon our children and their children due to these misguided political victories.
