For those of you who have been to The Barnyard Sanctuary, you know what our chicken area looks like. For those of you who have not, it is a large 90x120 chain link pen with a giant net stretched over it. Last year, for all the record snowfall we had, we did not have one single incident or problem with this pen. This year, the first snowfall (extremely wet and heavy- Thanksgiving Eve) caused it to all collapse and pulled 2 of the walls in. We determined that it was initially caused by some vines that grew up and over the far end, which blocked the snow from falling through the holes. The net at that end sank to the ground and it pulled everything from the opposite end right on over! Thankfully, no one was hurt, and no one escaped. Everyone was already tucked into their beds due to the snow. Yesterday, Glenn Huff and 2 of his sons, Shane and Kurt, along with a friend, came over and cleaned off all the snow and got it all upright again. What a GREAT job they did and just in the nick of time. We were worried that the net would be frozen to the ground for the winter. This Thanksgiving, we were grateful it wasnt worse than it was, and even more grateful that no one was injured or lost. Now, we are (eternally) grateful for our incredible volunteers. :)
