If you would like to donate to the Chair project you can make check payable to Town of Pageland and put CHAIRS in the memo line! We are 2 weeks away from project deadline completion! Remodel of the Boy Scout Hut By Kevin Smith Beginning October 1st, seniors visiting the Senior Nutritional Center on North Sycamore will notice a few changes. The Griffin Beauties, in cooperation from the Town of Pageland, are currently in the process of remodeling the Boy Scout Hut for use by the Pageland Senior Nutritional Center. Services are temporarily being hosted by Rose Memorial Nazarene Church while the remodel is being completed. “They decided as a group that this was a project they wanted to do and the project took wings from there,” explains Griffin Beauties coordinator Tim Griffin. “Each year, we chose a project to work on in the community and this is one that is very dear to the girls. Miss Pageland 1931 Pearl Arant has lunch there daily.” Made up past, present and future pageant participants, the Griffin Beauties’ remodel efforts are extended into daily Center activities, including providing deserts for seniors, planning games, and organizing variety shows for the attending senior citizens. Active since 1979, the center serves approximately 25 senior citizens daily. In addition to providing a nutritious meal each day to both visiting seniors and those unable to drive (a van service is provided upon request), the center assists seniors with living will, health and nutrition services, fellowship and other daily activities. The center is partially funded by Vantage Point Aging and Disability Resource Center operating out of Hartsville. Under the regulation of the Lt. Governor’s office, the Vantage Point ADRC is managed locally by Kay Baker and operates through donations, grants, fundraisers, and matching funds from the state. “The Boy Scout Hut is in bad need or repair,” says Griffin. “The girls started last week with a major clean out of the building with the assistance of Donnie and Pattie Pigg, who removed and placed into storage all the Boy Scout items. Then the girls did a day of deep cleaning the building from top to bottom.” “Next we will be sealing the wood and replacing baseboards. The 2 offices that are located in the building are in need of carpet and the main room is in need of a good tile or a garage floor concrete paint and sealed. The lighting fixtures are going to be replaced to provide better lighting for the seniors to read and to do puzzle books with. The Chairs are cracking and need replaced and we need 4 plastic banquet tables. The fireplace needs a mantle and we need a set of bookcases built in.” With the Griffin Beauties handling interior cleanup and remodeling, the Town of Pageland has already repaired cracked floors, removed a tree that was causing foundation issues, and are taking bids for other major exterior renovations such as new windows, siding, gutters, doors, and concrete repair. While the center’s daily activities are partially funded through state programs, the renovation and remodel are solely a community effort. “We really need chairs and tables,” says Griffin. “We need 50 chairs at $21 each and four tables at $60 each. We’re offering chair sponsorships to businesses and individuals at $100 for five chairs. We need carpet for two offices and someone to install it.” “Decorations are also appreciated,” says Griffin, noting the donation of art and decorative items from 1983 Miss Pageland Patty Mungo. In addition to monetary donations, the senior center renovation project is also seeking assistance for construction and electrician projects with approved contractors or volunteers. Griffin: “We need someone to build and install a mantel and bookcases, and a licensed electrician to install new lights.” Information on donations and volunteering can be found at Pageland Town Hall, or by contacting Tim Griffin at (843) 672-7659 or emailing griffridge@yahoo.
