For those of you who still have doubts that 70s king of feta-cheese music Demis Roussos was ALSO capable of moments of sheer vocal genius : listen to this, taken from the soundtrack to legendary 1982 sci-fi masterpiece Blade Runner - and think again. The films music was composed, arranged, performed and produced by other Greek genius Vangelis (who was the founder and leader of the band that put Demis on the map, Aphrodites Child). But on this, Demiss vocal lifts the proceedings up to yet another level of frightful beauty. The stylings and language pay tribute to his childhood in Egypt : set to a properly apocalyptic, hyper-urban soundscape of sweeping synthetic strings and distant echoes of life and death, his performance has him sounding like a time-traveling futuristic Muezzin, straight back from watching the end of the world and eager to share the experience. One of the most fantastically chilling moments in the BR soundtrack (which everyone who is serious about film AND / OR music should own) (in multiple copies) (as well as the film itself) (thats enough brackets for now, thank you), and as far as Im concerned in film music history.
