For those still thinking about the recent wage story on Delta - TopicsExpress

For those still thinking about the recent wage story on Delta County, just remember this... LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Poorest or Richest? Okay, so the Bureau of Labor Statistics ranks Delta County dead last in average weekly wages for the entire U.S. in 2013. That’s discouraging; I get it. But, these numbers do not tell of the treasures stashed away in Delta County. Someone needs to send out a reminder – so here goes. The Delta County I remember is rich in things that matter more than money ever will. Like memories of simpler days. Days of hard work and evenings of joyful laughter as carefree children chase fireflies in the twilight. Homemade ice cream and pick-up basketball games. Little league baseball, Friday night football and Sunday morning church. The Delta County I remember is rich in friendship, faith and integrity. Where a handshake still means something, where your word is your bond. Where neighbor helps neighbor because they can – and they care. Where God is not a curse word, but the One to whom prayers are raised on bended knees. The Delta County I remember is rich in family. The values learned from eking out a living in the black soil of the Sulphur bottom. And by doing so, passing on a solid work ethic to your children. Families who love each other. Where father and mother are respected, and children are encouraged to excel. Call me naive. Maybe this Delta County no longer exists. But, I know it did once upon a time; I lived it. So have many others. This Delta County still lives in me. And if these treasures are still to be found from Pecan Gap to Charleston, and from Lake Creek to Enloe to Klondike, then Delta County possesses a wealth that deserves to be nurtured and a legacy that must continue. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. (Proverbs 9:10) Respectfully, Joe Price Ferndale, WA
