For those that dont know, I tinker around with solar power. I ran across a website today talking about non-profits getting solar power systems for free through grants and donations. Heres an idea. Theres a system called grid-tied solar power. In this setup, you place panels on your property and theyre tied into your house and the electric service coming into your house. Any time the sun is out, theyre producing electricity and feeding it into your house. If they produce more electricity than you are using (for example- if youre at work and theres little electricity being used at your house), then it feeds the excess electricity back through the power lines and the electric company is required by federal law to buy that power back from you. This results in lower utility bills for you. Now, lets apply that to the Community Center. Most of the time, especially during the day, no one is at the Community Center and power usage is at a minimum. So, if we had a grid-tied system installed there, the panels would be making electricity and selling it back to Holston Electric. If we produced more than we used for the month, then we would not only not have an electric bill, but we would get PAID for having solar panels. Im doing some more research on the grant process and will be contacting a few solar installers to see if they can get me more information. If this is something that we could do, would you guys be interested? And if we did do this, how would you feel about us being a demonstration site/ educational site for other people to come see how it works? This would be great publicity for us as well.
