For those who consider seeking help from America: At a time when the divided Muslims of al-Andalusia were terrorised by the Castillian Christians murder and rape of their wives and daughters, Alfonso VI addressed himself as the king of two religions and wrote to al-Mutamid “My stay in this place has been too long. The heat is great and the flies intolerable; make me a present of your palace, that I may solace myself in its shadowy gardens and keep away the flies from my face.” Al-Mutamid wrote on the back of the letter “We have read your letter, and understood its arrogant and taunting comments. We intend to provide you shortly with a shaded spot under the shade of the tall shields of the Murabitoon.” So he sent to Yousuf ibn Tashfeen, the amir of the Murabitoon in Marakesh, who replied أنا أوَّل مُنتدِب لِنُصرةِ هذا الدين “I am the first to respond to help this deen” The people around Al-Mutamid were afraid of such confrontation and that Yusuf bin Tashfin might take the power from Mutamid, so they said to him “Two swords cannot fit in one scabbard.” Al-Mutamid replied “I have no desire to be branded by my descendants as the man who delivered al-Andalus as prey to the infidels. I am loath to have my name cursed in every Muslim pulpit. And, for my part, I would rather be a camel-driver in Africa than a swineherd in Castile.” He said “My current situation is two options, one of doubt and one of certainty, and I must choose one of them. As for the doubtful one, it is whether to apply to Yusuf bin Tashfin, or to Alfonso VI. It is possible that either of them keep their promise faithfully, or not.” “As for the one of certainty, If I depend upon Ibn Tashfin, then I will please Allah, but if I depend upon Alfonso, then I will enrage Allah. So, the doubtful situation being as it is, why should I leave what pleases Allah for what angers Him?” On 13th Ramadan 479 AH Yusuf Ibn Tashfin defeated Alfonso VI then started to unify the disunited Muslims of al-Andalusia.
