For those who dont know how or why the ice bucket challenge - TopicsExpress

For those who dont know how or why the ice bucket challenge started, and especially to those who have posted negative things about it, heres the guy who made it all happen! While I have personal experience with ALS, so it may have affected me a little more, Id still be shocked if you can watch it without tearing up at least a little. Some have said they dont understand how this helps. If you do the challenge, you are still asked and encouraged to donate something, the bigger donation is meant for those who dont do it because it doesnt then spread to more people. I dont know if people truly understand what this disease does to a person unless youve seen it. The persons mind is 100% in tact while their body just stops working little by little. When given a diagnosis, symptoms have already progressed over a period while they ruled everything else out. At that point, you are told the life expectancy from that point is 3-5 years. For some its a slow progression and a lot of assistance technology & medical intervention is needed to do the most basic things like eat & talk. For others, like my father, news is given & symptoms progress very quickly and 6 months later, that person is gone. So, if you are someone who chooses not to participate or thinks its ridiculous, thats your choice. But I urge you to reconsider and/or at least keep that opinion to yourself. I dont know of any other illness that truly has no change in prognosis in over 80 year of its existence. Nothing has helped consistently delay symptoms or prolong life, let alone come close to a cure. Everyone has the right to donate to what they believe in & in their own time, but I just ask anyone that feels that way to refrain from discouraging others to participate. As of yesterday, the national ALS Association has raised 15.6 million dollars as a result of the #IceBucketChallenge, compared to less than 2 million in the same time period last year. Thats pretty incredible & hopefully a real start at change!! Thank you to those who have participated!
