For those who missed out on the poetry workshop at this years festival, heres exciting news of a new series being run our parent charity to tide you over until this years festival... Barn Owls: the Endelienta Poetry Group at the Stone Barn, St Endellion, PL29 3TP 10.00-12.00: first Saturday each month £7 per session (£5 concessions) includes hot drink & biscuits You are invited to become part of this new group who meet for the first time on Saturday 1st March with further sessions planned for 5 April, 3 May, 7 June, 5 July, 4 October, 1 November and 6 December. If you enjoy reading poetry and would like a better understanding of how it works; if you have always written or wanted to write poetry, or have found yourself writing poetry recently, then this is for you. Feel free to attend some or all of the workshop sessions; however, spaces are limited, so priority will be given to those who attend regularly. During each session well look at a couple of contemporary poems and use them to explore what it is that makes them work, partly through a critical reading of them, but mostly through writing our own work in response to them or to some aspect of them. Writing poetry is, perhaps, the best way to understand poetry, as the experience underlines the importance of honesty and clarity as well as of technique including discussion of form (the sonnet, haiku etc), the use of metaphor and simile, diction, rhythm including metre, and rhyme. Helen Jagger is a poet, and teacher of poetry writing whose work has been published in magazines in the UK, US and Australia. She runs weekly poetry workshops as well as the Poetry Societys North Cornwall Stanza and was poet in residence at Pencarrow from 2010 - 2012. She is currently working with the Falmouth Poetry Group on a new poetry festival: cornwallcontemporary.wordpress/ for 28-29 June, 2014. She founded and ran the Indian King Arts Centre in Camelford for ten years, after (very) early retirement from her post as Head of English at Sir James Smiths School, Camelford. She graduated in English literature from Cambridge University in 1979.
