For those who think and say that groups like the Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Steering Committe which I am a proud member, the Church And Community In Action, the NAACP, the ACLU, the Womens League, the Urban League, Fraternities, Sororities, Christians & Jews Associations and others are no longer relevant in todays society may be somewhat mistaken, no they are totally mistaken. These groups are filled with citizens that have experienced injustice first hand, have family ties to people who were victims of discrimination because they were considered less than human because of race or religious beliefs and younger generations that have knowledge of historic facts of the past inequalities and present realities. Members of these groups may not be perfect, who is, and disagree sometimes on the old or new ways of achieving our goals but we believe in the needs of the communities and its people have a greater purpose so we try to serve them through the stated missions of our perspective organizations! Will we always get it right, probably not, but decisions made collectively by these groups are given careful discussion and consideration whether its endoresing candidates for public office, publicly protesting issues of local community or national concerns, getting important information, such as voting rights, to the general public, honoring deserving citizens for their dedicated years of serving people or whatever else falls under the guidelines of our missions are not taken lightly. Give these groups the benefit of the doubt as the members with years of experience working in the communities together with young creative critical thinkers come together for whats in the best interest of the people we attempt to serve! Congratulations to the Portsmouth MLK, Jr. Leadership Steering Committee for the choices made for this years election for public office which the majority of the voting citizens agreed!!! I would like to thank the Honorable Laural J. Armstrong, who MLK endorsed, for her service on the School Board and her valient effort in a special election to remain there! Im sure she will continue her concern for Portsmouth students in another capacity!
