For those who think the title ustadh is less than SHAIKH and they dont like to be called the latter, I say that ustadh is actually the same of not even more revering when a SHAIKH is addressed by it. It was used by Imam Muslim Ibn Al-Hajjaj ( the mujaddith) when addressing his teacher ( ustadh), imam Al-bukhari, May Allah have His mercy on both. He addressed Al-Bukhari by saying: دعني أقبل قدميك يا أستاذ الأستاذين ، وسيد المحدثين ، وطبيب الحديث في علله Oh, ustadh of all ustadhs, master of mihaddotheen and the doctor of the (ilal) of Hadeeth, let me kiss your feet *(Ial) is the science of knowing the weakness of the Hadeeth text or chain of narration. وقال ابن القيم في رسالته تفصيل القول في التقلييد1): ... وقد جعل اللهُ ـ سبحانه ـ في فِطَرِ العبادِ تقليدَ المتعلمين للأُستاذين والمعلمين، ولا تقوم مصالح الخلق إلا بهذا ... Ibn alqayuem said in a treatise about taqleed: Allah SW made the immitation of students to their Ustadhs, ingrained in their fitrah.... So, Ustadh or Shaikh, there is no big deal. Dont think you become more humble by asking people to call you ustadh. Lastly for any of my colleague who might come back at me and say the story is weak, Ill say that I adopt Ibn Hajars response to Al-Iraqi. Allah knows best!
