For those who want to know haiku basics. Haiku /high-koo/ is a form of poetry, originally by Japanese poets but the form was adapted to English and other languages by poets in other countries. Traditionally, Haiku are short poems that use sensory language to capture a feeling or image. They are often inspired by an element of nature, a moment of beauty or a poignant experience. Structure of Haiku. Japanese Haiku traditionally consist of 17 syllables or sounds. A piece is divided into three phrases (lines): 5 sounds (on the first line), 7 sounds(on the second line) and 5 sounds (on the third line). *Remember this: Traditional Haiku formula 5-7-5 Other variations of the formula are: 4-6-4 3-5-3 or 3-4-3 Application of the formulas.
