For those whove read the book, this song might be familiar. At least I hope it is. Some seem to think that there was basically one recording artist in the 1950s: Namely, Elvis. Maybe they remember Chuck Berry, too. But no: The 50s werent all rock n roll. Rock was still seen as fringe music in those days--greasy kids stuff. Legit pop music was performed by crooners like Frank Sinatra, Pat Boone, and Mr. Mellow himself, Perry Como. This song was the 10th biggest record of 1957, and is pretty close to 100% American cheese. It handily outsold the Elvis classic Jailhouse Rock as well as several Chuck Berry hits. To its credit, it does succeed in being intoxicatingly catchy, and has a chord sequence easy enough for the musical Nick Pente to replicate while seated at a campfire as he tries to reconnect with his own identity, and to charm his new, unlikely hosts. Lean back for a couple minutes and enjoy some fine, aged American cheddar. Oh, and buy Eye of the Diamond-T, now available on Amazon in softcover and Kindle, and wherever fine e-books are sold.
