For times when you have to go off the grid, if you do not have a clotting agent such as CELOX, you can in fact use simple ground black pepper to stop bleeding quickly for small to medium sized cuts/wounds. Black pepper is naturally antibacterial and makes blood coagulate quickly and stop bleeding. Finely ground black pepper works the best, and it does not burn. If you cant sew up the cut, you can use butterfly stitches by holding the cut together and placing Xs over the cut with tape. That is how my Mother used to stitch up all the kids in my family. I do have a scar on the one done on my knee, because I kept busting it open.
