For tonights edition of International Week, DARK Radio takes you to Mother Russia. Russia is a country that has always fascinated me. It is the boundary between East and West, partaking of both but belonging to neither. As such, the people of Russia have long suffered an identity crisis, which is ironic because to the rest of the world they are distinctive and unique. Thats just as true of Russian metal as it is of the Russian people. In fact, Russias metal bands are, in my view, the best in the world at the sub-genre known as Pagan Metal. (If you dont know what Pagan Metal is, look it up. Or maybe my friend Nate will be kind enough to comment with a brief overview...?) So, tonight I bring you all two Russian metal bands that both specialize in Pagan Metal. First up is Arkona, fronted by a remarkable woman who is the visionary, songwriter, and lead vocalist of the group. Arkona weaves Russian folk music and Slavic myths into heavy metal, and they do so with such artistry that I personally consider them the best Pagan Metal group in the world.
