For two years I have been avidly following the story of the last three elephants at the Toronto Zoo and the efforts to get the elephants into a sanctuary to live out their lives. Today - within the next couple of hours - these amazing souls, Toka, Thika, and Iringa will be arriving at the Performing Animal Welfare Society - PAWS, where they will live in relative freedom, roaming the many acres, having access to high quality veterinary and rehabilitative care (including heated pools!), and not having to deal with being on display. There are other African elephants at PAWS and these ladies may choose to socialize with them. A really big thank you to all who made this happen, including Bob Barker, who paid for the transportation (an estimated $300,000). An article from the CBC on the transport: https://facebook/pawsweb.org CBC piece summarizing the situation and the history of elephants at the zoo: cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/the-long-goodbye-of-the-toronto-zoo-elephants-1.1894496 Blog / twitter feed reporting on the transport: cbc.ca/fifth/elephants/
