For years, Bush’s stature as a leading voice for education reform was seen as a tremendous asset to his national ambitions. But his opponents now have good reason to hope it could become an albatross, as many of the policies he is most closely associated with have come under fire from both conservative activists and moderate suburban parents. Those policies include Bush’s embrace of high-stakes testing, his push to grade schools (and flunk them if they post poor test scores) and his close ties with corporations that seek profit in public education.
