For years, I have always wanted to conceive a multi-part fantasy epic blockbuster project featuring 2D hand drawn Genndy Tartakovsky-type and Samurai Jack-style animated cartoon people, naturalistic CGI dinosaurs and live action locations filmed in both anamorphic 35mm and IMAX 70mm, as well as live action people--an animated/live action hybrid humans, toons n dinosaurs epic fantasy that might use a blending of different mediums and techniques as a founding artistic element. Look at some of the challenges: 1) Make a multi-part epic fantasy blockbuster movie project with 2D traditional hand drawn animated cartoon characters done in the design and animation style of Genndy Tartakovsky’s Samurai Jack playing the lead characters. 2) Create a fully-realized world of real live action and 2D hand drawn animated Genndy Tartakovsky-type/Samurai Jack-style cartoon peoples as well as naturalistic (but not too realistic) CG dinosaurs that is not only fabricated mostly from live action sets and locations, miniatures and sometimes CGI environments/matte paintings, as well as being done in both anamorphic 35mm and 70mm IMAX, but also one that might rival The Lord of the Rings and TV’s Games of Thrones (and its source books, The Song of Ice and Fire series) in all its intricate detail. and 3) Tell a mostly powerful and dramatic story of good and evil not only with a cast that consists of live human actors, but also 2D traditional hand drawn Genndy Tartakovsky-type/Samurai Jack-style toons as well as naturalistic computer generated dinosaurs (and not to mention, with far more characters, far more settings, far more of everything than, say, J.R.R. Tolkien’s trilogy The Lord of the Rings). And oh! It will be about four cartoon kids (consisting of three ethnic teenage girls who are respectively white, black and Asian (a la Dexter’s Laboratory’s Dee Dee, Mee Mee and Lee Lee) and one young white boy (albeit one who is less arrogant than Dexter’s Laboratory’s Dexter himself)) who all embark on an epic journey together across a world marked by dinosaur-inhabited wildernesses and distant, exotic, unknown faraway lands and civilizations, on an epic quest to stop a tyrannical rival neighbor/dark lord from bringing death and destruction to their community. I am also very adamant that the lead character the audience is to identify with (and through which the audience will be transported into the world of humans, toons and dinosaurs) be an teenage Asian female toon in the Genndy Tartakovsky/Samurai Jack design and animation style. I also wanted to create the world of my as-yet-untitled humans, toons n’ dinosaurs epic first. The visual world, that is. What the characters and creatures (be it human, toon, or dinosaur) looked like…what the whole place was. I wanted to start with that, and let the mutli-part epic story grow before I will enter production/principal photography. And I think my as yet untitled humans, toons n’ dinosaurs epic may be the kind of live action/animated film most of Hollywood might run many miles away from, especially since: 1) It may not be based on a novel or comic book. 2) It may not launch a franchise, for it may be one single story narrative with a multi-part structure to be done back-to-back. 3) it may have a lot more in common with Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, Disney’s Fantasia (especially the Rite of Spring and Sorcerer’s Apprentice segments) and/or Genndy Tartakovsky’s Samurai Jack cartoon show (and especially, and most precisely, the Emmy Award-winning Birth of Evil two-parter from 2003) than the escapist fantasy of Jurassic Park, the cartoon meets reality comedy fantasy of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, the child-friendly fantasy of Land Before Time, and the cavemen and dinosaurs mash-up fantasy of The Flintstones and One Million Years BC. and 4) It may not only prove that as long as there are great battles between good and evil, a chosen one and/or magic jewelry, epic fantasies do not even need to just borrow from just J.R.R. Tolkien or from just Medieval Europe, but also prove that as long as there are T. Rexes and Raptors and/or fear and wonder, dinosaur themed fantasies (especially of the big, Hollywood action adventure variety) do not even need to just borrow from just Jurassic Park or Flintstones or Land Before Time. In addition, I, as shepherd and overall director/supervisor of this project may also take college classes, do little jobs and other things like that so that the making of (and production on) my as yet untitled humans, toons and dinosaurs epic could continue. For someone using all that money and acclaim to pipe funds into his or her dream project for years or even decades may be evidence of a rare kind of dedication that can usually be seen in people like Terrence Malick, Stanley Kubrick as well as Orson Welles. And so, what do you think of what I envisioned for my as of yet untitled ‘humans, toons n’ dinosaurs’ epic project?
