For years, the shadow of the Dyfnant Wind Farm has hung over Dyffryn Banw. Multi-national energy giant Iberdrola (Spanish company choosing to use the brand Scottish Power) proposed to build the largest wind turbines in the world in the Dyfnant Forest, with scant regard for the effect on local residents and businesses. Many of us will remember the balloon flown on the day of one of the consultations which shocked many people: the turbines would have dominated the entire valley. Iberdrola has announced that they are abandoning this scheme, citing amongst their reasons strong local opposition. I am proud to live in a community which has shown such steadfast and intelligent opposition to a scheme which would have benefited foreign investors at our cost. Other windfarm developers take note: Iberdrola have deep pockets but even they cannot afford to take on the people of Montgomeryshire.
