For yesterday ON THIS DAY In 1660 Charles II returned to England with his brother James after spending years in exile on the Continent following the execution of their father Charles I and the dissolution of the monarchy. With no monarchy Britain had been led by Oliver Cromwell as Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland. After Cromwell died in 1658 he was succeeded by his son Richard who served for just nine months before Charles was invited back to Britain in 1660. The monarchy was restored and he became King Charles II of England, Scotland and Ireland. Landing in Dover on the 25th May as he set foot on shore Charles is said to have knelt to the ground and given thanks to God. During his life Charles bore no legitimate children although he did acknowledged at least twelve illegitimate children by various mistresses. As his illegitimate children were excluded from the succession, when he died in February 1685 he was succeeded by his brother who became James VII and II
