For your info ....Our childcare centre recently received a fax re: can eggs produced by the chickens at the childcare centre be consumed (naqld.org/food-foundations/can-early-years-settings-use-eggs-from-chickens-raised-on-site? It refers to Standard 2.2.2) I have written to Food Safety Qld suggesting that ANZ Food Standard 2.2.2 be amended to reflect the fact that children in childcare, kindy’s and schools who are involved in the raising of chickens be permitted to have these eggs be consumed. At a time when we have a massive obesity issue in Australia (largely due to the consumption of processed food), educating our kids about healthy food choices, is what many centres have taken it upon themselves to do, eg vegie patches, chicken rearing for eggs, other. Having standards that elevate the ‘safeness’ of processed foods above ‘home’ grown foods, is counterproductive to people having a closer relationship to REAL foods. As a concerned parent, it is important that regulations consider the bigger picture. You may be solving one problem, but in my view this standard has some bad side-effects. I am a mother of two children, 6 and 3. Both our school and daycare centre raise chickens providing the children with an opportunity to learn about chickens and food production. Consuming the eggs (eg in a pikelet making morning or for home made items available from the tuckshop) is a celebratory event for the kids to appreciate what they have grown and reinforces the point of where food comes from and that food can actually be grown and does not only come from a supermarket or shop.
