Forcing students to contend with a faulty Common Application that is clearly not up to its task is an unconscionable exacerbation of what is already an overwhelming process. Even if the “glitches” can be addressed promptly, the fact remains that the new application, by requiring students to fit their essay and all details of their activities into a few small spaces with barely comprehensible and depersonalized formatting, makes a mockery of the students’ efforts and creates a strong inference that holistic admissions are a thing of the past. If those schools who use the Common App exclusively want to demonstrate that they are not complicit in this ongoing travesty, they must pull the plug on the Common App for this year, post pdf applications on their websites and allow students to submit them the old fashioned way, on paper in the mail. Going forward they should insist on a return to the old Common App format that allowed students to upload documents that could be proud to present.
