Forecasting snow amounts can be difficult because the water content of snow varies depending on the environment in which snow crystals form. We call it snow:liquid ratio. For example, wet Fall or Spring snow could be 6:1, meaning six inches of snow melts down to one inch of water. Average snow is about a 10:1 ratio. The champagne powder of our Colorado ski resorts is typically drier...more like a 20:1 snow to liquid ratio on average. This means 20 inches of snow will melt down to an inch of water. The Arctic air arriving this morning will produce extremely dry and fluffy snow. Expect something like a 30:1 snow to liquid ratio. This means a 3-6 snow over a couple of dats has very little water in it. Brooms will be more effective than a shovel. Your hand can brush any new snow off the windshield too. Stay warm and enjoy the dry and airy snow! P.S.-Good news is roads usually arent bad with this type of snow.
