Foreign prisons are not secure for Guantanamo detainees That - TopicsExpress

Foreign prisons are not secure for Guantanamo detainees That prisons abroad are not secure is a conclusion encouraged by a prison break at the Abu Ghraib in Iraq (infamous for the abuse during the occupation like Guantanamo). This is clearly quite important when considering what is to be done with the Guantanamo detainees; the assumption of those for closing the base is that most will go into prison in their own countries, but if the prison is not secure then should they be sent. This particularly applies to countries like Yemen where the government often does not have complete control over the country, and certainly does not hold a monopoly on the use of force. This however to me seems like a good reason to actually come up with charges and put these people on trial rather than an argument against closing the base. If you want them in a secure prison convict them and send them to a US prison. If you don’t have the evidence against them then they really should not be in prison at all. Even from the more hawkish side this argument should not carry much weight; any ‘terrorist’ attempting a break out would be much better to stay where he is. Considering the current administration’s policies actively getting away is liable to mean as soon as your location is known you will get blown up by a drone strike. nbcpolitics.nbcnews/_news/2013/07/24/19662222-abu-ghraib-break-out-gives-guantanamo-closing-foes-new-argument?lite idebate.org/blog-post/foreign-prisons-are-not-secure-guantanamo-detainees
