Forensic Specialist I Utah Dept of Public Safety, West Valley City Salary: $16.07 - $27.63 Hourly Final Filing Date: February 16, 2015 Duties: Under supervision, is responsible for assisting Forensic Scientists by performing assigned maintenance on laboratory equipment and quality control of reagents; performing routine technical procedures and operating the automated DNA robotic systems to include biological sample extraction, quantification and analysis set up; perform the day-to-day operations within evidence-intake and CODIS specimen– intake; perform routine clerical duties and assist with screening biological evidence casework. May testify regarding crime laboratory activities in a court of law. Follows all established protocols and procedures and assigned other tasks as deemed necessary by the forensic biology manager. Requirements: Knowledge of forensic DNA principles, laboratory techniques as well as knowledge of the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Short Tandem Repeat (STR) analysis, and capillary electrophoresis methods is desirable. Computer literacy in the use of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Access and Power Point) and familiarity with database applications such as: LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) and CODIS (Combined DNA Index System) is desirable. An associate’s degree and some laboratory experience are preferred. Experience and knowledge in the maintenance, operation and validation of robotic systems is preferred. Work is performed in a Forensic Laboratory setting; exposure to chemicals and biological fluids; statewide travel in car and/or small aircraft will be required when needed. Must be able to work under stressful situations with strict deadlines. Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.; requires frequent walking, standing, sitting and bending; and exposure to noise from equipment and instruments utilized in the Laboratory is required. Works with laboratory chemicals and various biological fluids with the possibility of being exposed to blood borne pathogens. Must successfully pass a test for color blindness. Must have manual dexterity to perform assigned laboratory tasks as determined by the forensic biology manager. Must be willing to provide a DNA sample which will be maintained by the forensic biology manager for quality assurance. Do you have the Education Required?
