Forest / Wild Fire in USA on Saturday Description A wildfire that began Friday afternoon near the San Bernardino County city of Yucaipa quickly burned through more than 200 acres, officials said. Evacuations are in place for residents north of Carter Street and west of Bryant Street, said Carol Underhill, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino National Forest. The brush fire started about 2 p.m. near Highway 38 and Bryant Street, Underhill said. "The heat and the flames and what is in the smoke is not helping us at all," California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Bill Peters told KTLA-TV Channel 5. At least one chopper and helitanker are helping fight the flames. Neighbors stood on rooftops with hoses and soaked their homes even as firefighters moved through neighborhoods and warned people to leave. The cause of the fire is under investigation. California temperatures have been soaring in the first major heat wave of the summer, and humidity levels remain low, putting firefighters on high alert.
